Star Trek: the new movie

Ah, star trek, star trek, star trek. I watched this like pretty much every nerd and pretty much any kid who had BBC2. I watched the film yesterday and the time, after all the adrenaline was thinking THIS...IS....EPIC but after a nights sleep, maybe I've calmed down a bit.

The truth is, yes I would recommend it, its intriguing as its not some sexed up remake, won't say anything to spoil it but it's an interesting twist. It's funny, light laughs of course, CGI to a sensible amount. that may sound stupid but this is one of the big franchises, so its understandable if it went the way of star wars but like many they've learnt.

I think its an interesting group to play the characters. Simon Pegg was very funny, Kirk was good and Spock was a laugh. it's a very above average summer blockbuster.

I love my handhelds!!!

I love my Hand helds, even if I cant find the cursor on this goddamn screen telling me where to write!!! I don't know why I am writing about this specifically but what the hell, I got to say it I love them!!! I only ever bought one plug into tv console, the x box but I just find that I just find that I never use it as much as I can, I played WoW for a while but knew that it wasn't worth the money Vik and me put into it, so in the end I can always rely on my PSP and DS.

So which is the best? it really depends on what you want. A lot of people say the DS because the PSP is just porting old games and for the most, they are agree but sometimes thats a good thing with things such as this bad boy:
The Sega Mega Drive is just good fun, sonic, comix zone and even kid chameleon. It's just fun and as long as you are selective you get games which are decent. I would even advise Killzone: Liberation, its a Killzone game with a different perspective, more like a squad commander, its challenging and in a good way, though i kinda left it but I will be getting back to it. There's also games like daxter, Ratchet & Clank (in some form or another).

Now onto the DS, I have found myself coming back to two games. I have bought a new game; GTA chinatown wars. its good fun though I may make a review later as I have only played it for a few days. The two games I have been playing again are Final Fantasy III & Mariokart.

Anyone who has played a nintendo console knows how fun this game is, you have karts, a funny variety of characters and of course, the weapons, ranging from banana skins to missiles, tortoise shells to temporary invincibility stars, its actually one of the only games I can relax and play, sure its challenging but it isnt the type that you care if you win or lose.

Final Fantasy III may seem like a strange choice but it does work on the DS as it has updated graphics from the original and it has a solid story line. Its game play is wonderful and what really works is the fact that you can give your character jobs, there's no character with a definite job, they can all be whatever they want to be, I have started again.

Anyway, enough of this, hope to blog back later!!!

Nerdy Rant 2: how the greats fell

I recently (in the last month) have, for the hell of it, watched the newest of episodes of Simpsons. now I knew it would be shit, it ain't been good since series 9 back in the day but i thought, hey, lets see. now I wasn't surprised that it was hitting the controversial issues like Muslims post 9/11, oh wait, that would have worked 7 to 8 years ago, yep its poor but only recently have i actually appreciated why its poor as its happening on family guy. the problem: focus on one character.

If anyone has actually watched Simpsons recently, it has become completely focused on Homer, latest episode, Homer leaves Maggie in dangerous play pen, Episode before, Homer regrets not becoming class president, episode before that, Homer thinks Muslims are going to blow up springfield, the list goes on and yeah, there usually is another story but no effort is put into it and its become annoying. whats more tragic is the much loved Homer Simpson who, in his hey day, was actually funny, has kind of become like a friend of mine at uni; trying to make jokes which aren't funny in order to get the attention on him.

The same is becoming true with Family Guy; all episodes are becoming revolved around Peter, Peter does a TV show, Peter robs his in laws house, Peter turns gay, Peter has gone from being an actually funny random character to becoming rather obnoxious because there's always some dumb ass joke, like when he whispers behind meg about annoying she is to the the TV show and after he does it, he looks around the door to see her, ITS REALLY BAD. There is an episode with O jay Simpson and I am not even going to touch it, not because its "controversial" but I have been told it has been the worst family guy episode and this is from people who LOVE family guy.

Now I hope its just a lull as there have been several series that have had this, South Park had a lull for a series with a load of crap movie parodies every episode, scrubs had a bit of a let down during the 3rd series, it happens, they get better but then there's the tail of the Simpsons, the greatest most significant series that just went to hell.

On a more positive note, I got to say South Park is on top form. Ive actually really enjoyed these series, i watch a couple every few weeks and scrubs has been pretty decent, nothing spectacularly bad or good but fun to watch. I know that its a bit of an imbalanced subject matter wise but the Simpson and Family guy thing stood out for me.

Being Human: good but it surprised me

So in all I though that Being Human was decent but I was surprised by it in the sense that with

a concept like this, you would expect more interation comedy. Not so.
Now let me explain the concept a bit before I go on; A vampire, a werewolf living in a house haunted by a ghost. This is a very pretty simple plot for the series but there is more to it as their past lives and lives at the moment come into play.
It did have some seriously dark moments, some very cool moments in the final episode mos def but I just wish it had more of a focus on the everyday life of each of their characters.
The thing which sucks is properly the fact that the plot seems to be similar in the sense that its yet again more about the drama and less about the comedy.
I would advise you to watch it for a laugh but its still got room to improve. Pick it up on bbc iplayer before its lost or just laze about and find it on the internet someplace...

WANTED, the surprisingly good graphic novel that spawned a really shit film

Okay, I ain't blogged on here recently. I have been collecting my comic books and yes, I have been watching the wonder that is battlestar galactica, 2 out of the 6 episodes havnt been epic, so 66% has been frakkin' excellent. I pop back to Manchester to support my favourite comic book shop, travelling man and I pretty much work the rest of the time.

So on saturday, I picked up the wanted graphic novel as was interested in the book after hearing the original concept. From what I heard about the film, its a guild of assassins that choose their victims via the use of a loom and binary code for several centuries, so yeah, that seemed stupid. Then I heard about the original concept...

It's about a world in which all the super villains banded together in 1986 and defeated all the heroes. this is in itself cool. It's got a character who is pissed off because when they split up the world, he got Australia, even cooler. Finally, the main character is an absolute looser who is a bit racist as his boss is racist to him, I am very much wanted this.

I got to say its very tongue and cheek towards the world of superheroes, there's an interesting cast varying from characters like shit face (very funny) to much cooler baddies like the main characters father.

I think that Mark Millar is very cool. Yes I listen to the people who complain that he is pretentious and indeed the mainstream comics do seem to have a very unhealthy adoration towards him. Don't get me wrong, he makes great comics but to name a set of comics produced by him over several companies "Millarworld"? even if he didn't mean to, it comes across a tad bit obnoxious. But the one thing I like about him is the fact that he doesn't have tunnel vision or so I think he doesn't like Frank Millar and Jim Lee. I'm still waiting for All Star Batman to finish you lazy ass motherfuckers.

Yes there have been times when he has annoyed me with captain America crying like a bitch at the end of civil war, I like his stuff and for all the whiny, single, grossly overweight nerd criticism, he does good stuff. But back to my review.

This is a good read, very quick by my standards and there's a part of me that would love a sequel but it's brilliant by itself. pretty much anyone can enjoy it as there is no dense continuity but it relates to marvel and DC at the same time.

All in all, I give it 4 stars (wait I'm rating this? meh).

Im, so, HAPPY!!!!

It returned yesterday, Its frakkin excellent. yes the show that be known as battlestar galactica, frakkin' returned and I am SO HAPPY Its impossible to describe. And it wasn't shit like lost, it was so satisfying, every part of the episode, no crappy revelation only at the end of the episode, there was one like every 10 minutes, I dont want people to come along and find a spoiler, but please anyone who hasnt watched this series, start watching, you wont regret it in the long run. just watch it.

What other nerd news in my life is there? well, for some reason my nerd comic forum seemed to be a little obsessed with doing bios on characters only for it to be picked at by other forum users. need a new forum seriously soon. anyone comes accross me and actually has a forum they would advise, please do.
