The thing is I am not a big forum user, my brother is, some of my mates are but I am not. I am part of two forums and both are on yahoo!
The first is movie tawk, its a nice little movie review place filled with, and this is my analysis of what I think the demographic is, nice middle aged people who don't have a very esoteric taste, they love the stuff from when they were kids and love all the big name films now like twilight and Kong fu panda. this may sound like a criticism but it ain't, they have always been nice people and they are nice to me, film is obviously a subjective thing and I respect their tastes and they respect mine. period.
The other forum, and from the name of my rant, you should know by now, is a comic book forum and oh my days, they drive me insane. the forum is called Marvel vs DC vs Everybody else.
Its almost like looking into a stereotype. that fat nerd sitting at the computer bitching about everything because that's what they do, bitch about EVERYTHING or almost everything. there are a few things that they don't bitch about:
- Very non-mainstream comic book series like a booster gold
- that's it!!!
Now maybe you think I'm unfair, like once I saw a compliment to a series I read, but you see, you have to look at the emphasis on the word ONCE. They make one compliment one series they like and then continue to bitch about everything else. now for me to make a list about what they bitch about would bore you, so I will cut it down to a select more noticeable few:
- The summer epics of DC and Marvel:
As anyone would know, comic books have evolved and on many levels have hit the mainstream. thanks to films like spider man and x men, comics have definitely one hell of a following. but on an industrial commercial level, it has become a big earner. this is what the summer epic is about: getting us to buy large amounts of comics. Now many people may complain about this but I say this:
Get Over It
what do you expect? they are not bad people, they just want to do financially well, so if they market their comic books in the hopes of selling, they are making good business. Now as I write this, the two big summer events are (or in truth were but are still continuing) DC's Final Crisis and Marvel's Secret Invasion. Now I wont deny, I have read many marvel summer epics and have been disappointed many a time and even though this wasn't spectacular, it was definitely an improvement on many a years storyline. DC's storyline for me has been epic from the start and I agree this is my opinion.
The problem I find with people in comic book forums isn't the fact that they simple don't enjoy it, its that they make the same regurgitated statements they always do for example this is targeted at one forum guy with the user name Matthew Burke. His logic to this justifying his claim was:
1) "it's Morrison, therefor it will suck." Morrison was the surname of the comic writer, forgot his first name
2)a "crisis" has happened every 5 years
This is your reasoning? that because it is written by one guy who has written many an array of different stuff, with ups and downs in quality maybe, that its going to suck. come to think of it, if you know he sucks, why read it? THAT'S ANOTHER THING if you think its going to be poor, why read it? every fucking summer I get people complaining about how they knew it was going to suck and they bought it anyway. STOP BUYING IT IF YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE IT, you save money and you may actually have a life at the end of. but here's my second point; - How comics aren't what they used to be:
Now this one, THIS ONE ticks me off. These people are long term readers and like all those who read a comic series will have seen many a change in storyline and style. its like watching a genre such as film and seeing the gradual change it style. but see this is what annoys me. It's not that they don't like it, its just that they have this stereotype mentality, maybe you have seen this mentality or seen it ridiculed, of looking at earlier comics as being better through rose tinted goggles. "Oh god, when did Marvel lose its ability to end a story whine bitch moan, I'm never going to get laid, wah wah wah". It's always retrospective, that marvel and DC don't write them like use to, that this guy and that writer suck, If marvel keep going like this, well, by the moons of my Klingon planet, I'm going to stop reading their comics, WELL STOP READING THEM, YOU ONLY READ THEM SO YOU CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT SOMETHING OUT OF YOUR ROCK BOTTOM SELF ESTEEM AND YOUR TOTAL SOCIAL INADEQUACY. God damnit that was satisfying. seriously though, you sound like those elderly people who say how society was so much better in their day, which is the 1960's which consisted of racism and piss poor health care. it's more embarrasing because you have become something that will in the end be despised.
So Ultimatly, that's my rant, If any of you ever want me to give an opinion on a comic you've read or want me to read an opinion on yours, I will gladly. just send me a comment and I will and if I start to sound like a guy who bitches aboue everything, please tell me, I want to retain my life.
