I want to write a webcomic.

As the title suggests, I want to write a web-comic but to be honest, it feels a lot harder than I thought.

Immediately, I took the time to look around web-comics out at the moment. Most of them run on a program called comicpress, so I looked it up and was like "Yes, I can do this and what's more, it’s free!!!" So I downloaded the program.

It was at the point of opening the downloaded zip file that I realised that it was just a load of folders. But have no fear IT'S A ZIP FILE, just need to unzip it, it’s just a load of stuff compacted for easier download.

*To every guy who has some knowledge of tech saying to themselves that I am a moron because of anything I have written about computers in this blog, humour me. I am just a mere mortal to everyone I know who has any tech knowledge*.

So I unzip it with absolute glee, "just a small predicament" I said to myself" let’s gets this program started".

It was at the point of unzipping the zip file that I had downloaded that I realised that it was just a folder.

Now I mean this as a compliment to every person who has a webcomic but you make it look so easy. Even the ones who don't use comicpress, they're really nice looking!!! The ones with comicpress are themselves really nice, they look polished. You all do cool things like make the buttons look cool and have really gorgeous looking banners and little cool looking comment boxes and it's all really cool!!!

Anyway back to my story. So I went on the internet and looked at how to use comicpress and also asked people I know on twitter to send the word out that I wanted help with how to use comicpress.

Now, with the first thing, I came across the fact that comicpress needs wordpress. I looked up wordpress and this seems to do anything you want to do... with blogging. Now I am still at this point not sure what that means, I mean there are large amount of blog websites out there. There's windows live spaces which is extremely simple, tumblr is another, then there's livejournal and blogger. They tell me it’s easy but... you know what I'm going to continue with this point later.

I think at this point what I'm curious about is with all these blogging websites, why do you want a program to do what they do? You know what I think I know the answer, I assume it had to do with having an independence, like if you went on livejournal, you may be able to do anything but it’s always going to have the phrase livejournal.com in the name or blogger has blogspot.com. Is this all to do with wanting a name like ArunHackett.com?

Now as I said earlier I did a second thing, I went on twitter, which was more interesting. I received a joking tweet asking me "what is this comicpress you speak of?" from one of the guys who made comicpress. He has tried to be helpful at several points but even now that program means nothing to me.

Well, that's not true, I have learnt things about comicpress, namely that you need a host. This was the point I started giving up. There are obviously hosting websites out there, both paying and free with the former being a much better option. I chose not to go for paying because to be honest, I'm not that good and also I wasn't doing this for prophet. I wanted to simply learn to draw. I notice with many webcomics that their art improves and becomes more refined. I wanted to do a webcomic for that reason. I could post a few up, like 10 comics, and then let people know about the website just to play it safe.

The free option for webhosting I have done in the past, many a year ago with my windows live space. I would upload music so that I could get a web link that I could play music on the media player on windows live spaces. This was always a possibility but this all links into comicpress as a whole. IT’S NOT EASY or at least it’s not easy in the way a newcomer to web knowledge would think so.

I went to a friend's workplace and asked about uploading comics. For reasons that this may be too complicated for me, she advised making a flickr account for this reason.

So now there's a flickr account sitting empty as I try to finish one webcomic. I’ve done all the drawing and inking, now I need to do the Lettering. And the banner. And my biological science degree.

*Birdman sigh*

10 reasons Why I hate Cyclops

1) He has the blandest origin ever

Wolverine has a rather intriguing origin not simply because it remained hidden for so long but it overall shows the story of a man who has journeyed to many a place, lived over a 100 years and is the type of guy I would love to tell me stories over a bar, his powers manifested when he murdered a man with the stubs which would eventually become his claws.

Colossus is a story of a simple farming boy who has had a life and origin of tragedy and loss, his powers arose in his adolescence when he saved his sister from a runaway tractor.

Nightcrawler is a mutant whose obvious demonic features meant he had a life on the run but along the way joined a circus and gained amazing acrobatic skill.

Scott Summers origin, that I can honestly understand from reading comics involving these key moments: his parents got killed by aliens and Sinister "put in inhibitors" to stop him using his powers against him several years later. I know that many will think his is cool but seriously, the great stories are to do with tragedies which are believable. The great X men origins are those that involve there powers doing damage to others and the powers causing them to come across as freaks. Oh but let’s get onto the origins of his powers;

2) His powers were caused by brain damage

Yep, when his parents got captured by aliens, he jumped out of a plane, brother in arms and got brain damage that forever altered his powers, turning them into the "optic blasts" we associate with today.

3) His brother has a more interesting comic life
Havok is BADASS. For a period of time, Havok took the name mutant x when he got sent to another world many people were there but were twisted versions. Iceman who couldn't touch everyone, Storm was a vampire, heck the list goes on of interesting things to do with his journey as Mutant X. He came back and went on to lead the star jammers to get Lilandra back on the throne and overthrow Vulcan, the now Shiar Emperor, which leads me onto the fact that:

4) His Other brother is more interesting

Cyclops can shoot optic blasts.

Havok can shoot plasma blasts.

Vulcan can absorb, manipulate, transform and project energy. In addition to this, he can fly, project a force field and has psionic resistance.

Vulcan's story is an interesting one, sowed subtly into the X men timeline. Basically, he's the youngest Summer's brother, cut out of the womb of Kath Summers when D'ken murdered her. Following this, he was speed grown using Shiar Tech to adolescence to be used as a slave. He escaped and actually joined the x men team in training in time before getting absolutely annihilated by the island Krakoa. He was left for dead on the island floating in space. Now THIS is a very good reason to moan but he doesn't. You know who has no reason to moan? Scott Summers, that's who.

5) He's a whiny little Bitch

I want you (if you haven't read the comics I’m talking about) to visualise Scott Summers trapped on an island with a woman called Lee Forrester, a perky young women who was the captain of the boat with Cyclops on that crashed:

Lee Forrester: Oh my god, we crashed on a beautiful tropical island!!!

Cyclops: I MUH-MUH-MUH-MISS JEAN!!!

Lee Forrester: I’m sorry, I know you miss her but look, your powers that have been your curse, have now gone!!!

Cyclops: BUH-BUH-BUH-BUT I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT J-J-J-J-JEAN!!!

Lee Forrester: I am SO hot for you right now.

Cyclops then goes onto make out with her a lot and whine about Jean some more.

6) He's an adulterous wankshaft

Now you remember all that stuff about Cyclops whining about missing Jean? Well that came to an end when he actually found another woman.

Whom he married.

And he had a kid with.

WHO LOOKED THE EXACT FUCKING SAME AS JEAN.

Now I know that grief can make a man crazy but this woman looked exactly like Jean. Why you ask, because she was a clone. I am not going into the soap opera that that "clone time" was, I simply ask you this, you love someone, it hurts and you meet an exact replica, and you know that as a hero, villains love to screw with you, would you do go for it?

Anyway I digress, as you all know Jean came back and what does Cyclops do? Dump her and the kid’s ass to go back to Jean. Yeah there's a bit of awkwardness but his wife conveniently dies and gets to live with Jean and Cable never hears about his mother ever again. Fucking dickshit.

BUT IT DOESN'T END THERE.

Years later during the Grant Morrison run, he has a psychic affair with Emma Frost. Soon after it is revealed, Jean dies and guess what? No whining and what would Scott Summers whine about Jean when he now has a girl with, how can I say this, "larger assets".

7) He's a whiny little Bitch

It's visualisation time again. Now, it's deep space, the whole team of our loved X men (and that twatacular whiner) have a terrible realisation;

Storm: Oh god we have a brood egg inside each of us!!! what are we going to do?!?!

Cyclops: JUH-JUH-JEAN!!!

Storm: If these eggs, we'll die, our bodies will be consumed, all of us becoming like the broo...

Cyclops: I can't live without JEAN (emo pose) at least I will be with.... Her.

Storm: Dude shut the fuck up. Seriously

Unfortunately, he survived. Little wanker.

8) The best part of the x men movie trilogy was his whiny bitch ass in the first 5 minutes in the 3rd film

Think about it...

Logan: Where are you going Scott?

Scott: WHAT DO YOU CARE?!?! SHE'S DEAD!!! IM NOTHING WITHOUT HER!!! WEE-OOOH-WEEE

Logan: Look we all loved her but we have to get through this togeth...

Scott: GOD WHAT DO YOU CARE?!?!? MY LIFE IS SOOOO HARD!!!! YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO BE ME!!! I'M GOING TO DRIVE OFF ON MY MOTOCYCLE AND BE MOODY!!!

Logan: Listen you little bit...

(Logan is interrupted by Xavier’s voice in his head)

Prof. X: Logan, leave it, he's going to die in 5 minutes anyway.

Best movie of the trilogy for that single reason.

9) The great x men sacrifice themselves for the cause in many a great, heroic way and yet white boy whiny bitch Summers is STILL FUCKING ALIVE

10) Storm was a better leader

Ororo Munroe became the leader of the x men somewhere during the early 80s and has had it hard as a leader. She was the leader of the X men and the morlocks at one time and was also a leader during a time when she lost her powers. She has died in space, been close to being seduced to becoming a vampire and was with the team when they were willing to sacrifice themselves to save the world.

Scott Summers is a whiny Bitch, which is all I have to say. In a contest of who has had the hardest leadership. Storm wins.

Captain America and Batman; why the hell have your story lines been so similar?

The Avengers #4 (1964): We learn that Captain America's partner Bucky "Died" in an explosion
Batman #429 (1988): Batman's partner, the second Robin Jason Todd, Died after being beaten by the Joker and an explosion
Captain America volume 5 #10 (2005): Captain America finds out his partner is alive but is now the winter soldier, a dark assassin
Batman #638 (2005): It's found out that Batman's partner is alive but is now the red hood, a dark criminal.
Captain America #25: Captain America gets shot and "dies".
Final Crisis #6: Batman gets shot and "dies"
Captain America: Cap's old partner Bucky dons the costume, becomes new cap
Batman: Batman's old partner dons the costume, becomes new batman
Captain America #34 (2010): Cap's friends find out that the gun that shot him was a "magic time gun", turns out he was on a time adventure living his past.
Final Crisis #7 (2009): Turns out Batman isn't actually dead but was shot with Darkseid's magic "time displacing vision". Turns out he was on a time adventure living in the past.
Captain America Reborn (2009): We find out what Cap has been up to; meanwhile, his friends fight opposition to save him.
Batman The Return Of Bruce Wayne (2010): We find out what Batman has been up to; meanwhile, his friends fight opposition to save him.
dark avengers annual 1, new avengers annual #3, Captain America: who will yield the shield? (2009): We get to see Cap back in normal continuity before the story in which he has returned has even finished.
Batman & Robin #16, All the god-damn Batman: the road home issues (2010): We get back to see Batman back in normal continuity before the story in which he has returned has even finished.

I just don't understand why they are so similar. Sure, dismiss the top two but the rest are strangely similar. Also, let me say that even though the similarities are present in these incidents, each series has got its unique story lines leading up to these incidences. I love Morrison and Brubaker and have enjoyed both their works with each character, I would just love to know why these things keep happening.

Is it even them who chose to this or was this what the big wigs wanted and if so, Why do they want these things to happen? Anyone out know why or have theories?

Comics I picked up on thursday 13/7/10

Daredevil #509: To many, Shadowland has had a bad start and I do partially agree. We all knew what the ending would be to the first issue so it was an overall pointless issue. In the last year though I did start reading the Daredevil series starting with the Bendis Run and have enjoyed it. This issue subtly weaves around the events of shadowland and predominantly focuses on the main cast of the series who aren't Matt, and by this I mean Dakota, Foggy and the ever continually returning character Elektra. You know stuff is serious if Elektra returns. There's also a return of a villain who has potential if done right.

DMZ #56: This, in my opinion, was a fantastic issue. Of recent, there has been a big turning point in the war and the DMZ, so this issue was in the middle of 5 one off stories looking at people living there at the moment. The great thing is this issue is focused on Wilson, the Chinatown crime lord. It's beautiful and tragic, a story told from an old man reminiscing about when he was young and what these events really mean for him. Fantastic.

Justice League Generation Lost #7: Even though I chose to stop buying Brightest Day, I still peak into them to see what's going on. For once it got its act together and also linked into GL. The team are on the offensive again, this time breaking into checkmate. It has a sense of humour, especially to do with rocket red. Overall a decent issue but feels like it is linking into something else.

The Walking Dead #76: I know I always say this series is fantastic and may stop blogging about it because it is obviously becoming repetitive. It was a good issue. As usual.
